When do you check blood flow after filler treatment?
I perform the blood flow test twice per visit with lip filler treatment.
Wondering how to do this yourself?
- I perform the test by firmly pressing the area of skin.
- I press on the skin for 5/10 seconds and release.
How to spot immediate complications after filler treatment during testing
- The area should go white and quickly turn back to normal colour pink/red/bruised (if the area is bruised) this means there is blood flow.
- If the area does stays white then their maybe a potential complication.
The main complication with dermal fillers is an occlusion.
Your body shows signs this is happening by blanching.
When something blanches, it typically indicates a temporary obstruction of blood flow to the area. This causes the colour of that area to become pale white relative to the surrounding skin.

I always talk about this test with my patients during treatment whilst I am performing this exact same blood flow check procedure which you can see me performing in the video.

It’s very useful to know about this checking procedure yourself. Especially if you are considering filler treatments. I discuss with each patient so they are educated about how to test on them self when they leave my care and so they are able to identify any potential complications themselves.

How to test blood flow to dermal filler injection site?
After watching the video you can perform this test yourself by pressing gently on the area of your skin for 5/10 seconds it will turn pale and then resume back to its natural colour! It’s that simple.
